Gemvision is pleased to announce the winners of the GJTMC-Karachi Student Designer of the Year 2010. The judging panel was comprised of our in-house staff which included senior support staff, software developers, senior educational staff, international business staff and graphic designers. As a whole we were very impressed with the level of design, execution, and technical abilities of the participants of the contest.
Gemvision judged the entries based on three major factors: Technical Merit, Overall Design, and Presentation. Technical Merit refers to the complexity of the model - how the surfaces were created, difficulty of execution, and complexity of the design and Matrix model. Overall Design encompasses the aesthetic appeal of the model, how well the "ensemble" of the components of the design function together, and also how practical the design is regarding wearable jewelry. Presentation is largely based on the render - how well the object is rendered using the current technology - fillets, materials, ground planes, etc.
First Place
Kamran & Habeeb
This design was the unanimous choice of the judges. The most apparent and striking detail of this design is perhaps the fact that it is very difficult to design asymmetrical jewelry, and the necklace portion of this ensemble achieves this very gracefully. The overall execution of the metal portion of this design has a Victorian influence that is very regal and provides an elegant backdrop for the use of diamonds on the various parts of the design. The judges also felt that the various parts of the design - necklace, earrings and ring all worked well together to create a cohesive ensemble.
Technically the model was also very impressive. The "flow" of the curves used to produce the surfaces of the model were well drawn and created very clean and precise surfaces. The use of domed surfaces as well as filleted edges certainly lent to the cleanness of the design and aided in the presentation portion of the design.
The other two designs that made up the top 3 entries were equally impressive. The judging was truly difficult and not an easy decision to make. The other entries that did not make the final cut were extraordinary as well, and it was a pleasure to see the level of accomplishment the students possess with Matrix and their design skills.
Second Place
Rizwan, Mubashir, & Saquib
This ensemble also had a Victorian influence and the execution of this design was very inspiring. The model was well-built technically as well.
Third Place
Farzaam, Imran, & Zohaib
This design was very well executed as well, and as noted earlier the choice between three such strong entries was not an easy or casual decision.
The Gemvision staff were honored to be a part of the judging of this contest, and we look forward to seeing the designs and models from future contests or work produced by the students of GJTMC-Karachi.
